I agree, to some extent. I think it depends on how you define “best”, “learn” and “language”. 😉 I’m glad I started out with learning the basics of the English language at school, then university and then continuing to establish it as a language of use later by reading, listening, watching and speaking. Had I not been interested in languages and linguistics, I would not find it very helpful to be immersed in a culture without learning to swim first in the shallow waters.
Yes, you are right – definitions may impact. I do believe however that immersion as in being highly exposed to the language, read – talk – listen – study – etc, is key to successful learning and of gaining a confidence in using the language.
